Who Else Eats Too Many Refined Carbohydrates?

An article at Fit Sugar tipped me off to this research out of New Zealand about donutsbeing addicted to refined carbs.  Apparently, scientists there came to the conclusion that foods high in refined sugar can become as addictive as tobacco.  Has something to do with the glycemic index.  The higher the glycemic index of a food, the higher it’s addictive potential.

I have to say that I know I’m having a hard time not eating in one sitting the 54 rice crispy treats that my lovely mother-in-law gave me from Christmas.  This joggler loves rice crispy treats.

The good news is that scientists believe if it’s true that this is an addiction, people may be treated with patches to help break the addiction.  Can you imagine wearing a sugar patch to stop you from eating?

  1. I used to look for items in snack machines that provided the most number of calories per penny. An 85 gram honey bun had about 320 calories for 50 cents. Now that’s bang for your buck! They were dripping in sugary glaze. Makes my mouth water thinking about them. I’m 5′ 9″ and weigh about 140 lbs.
