An article at Fit Sugar tipped me off to this research out of New Zealand about being addicted to refined carbs. Apparently, scientists there came to the conclusion that foods high in refined sugar can become as addictive as tobacco. Has something to do with the glycemic index. The higher the glycemic index of a food, the higher it’s addictive potential.
I have to say that I know I’m having a hard time not eating in one sitting the 54 rice crispy treats that my lovely mother-in-law gave me from Christmas. This joggler loves rice crispy treats.
The good news is that scientists believe if it’s true that this is an addiction, people may be treated with patches to help break the addiction. Can you imagine wearing a sugar patch to stop you from eating?
