At long last, I’ve got a new pair of shoes. The last pair of Reeboks have been officially “retired”. This means that I will use them as my daily walk around shoes. It also means that I’ll have to figure out something to do with my old walk around shoes which were from the previous marathon. No more walking and joggling with those shoes.
My old Reeboks lasted 120 days and 489.3 miles. This is a little long but I just never got around to changing. Then the marathon came up and I didn’t want to change shoes a couple weeks before that. The experts suggest you change shoes every 300 to 500 miles. Since I’m a bigger runner at 6′ 1” and 192 lbs (2.35 m, 87.3 kg) my shoes are going to wear out faster. I’ve found that 300 miles is really the farthest I should go. Oh well, on to the new ones.
I went back to the Brooks brand of shoe. Specifically, I got the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 6 medium (shoe size 11.5 usa, 45.5 Euro, 10.5 UK, 29.5 cm). Here’s my impression so far.
Feel. Brooks shoes tend to feel “harder” than other running shoes like Saucony. This is similar to shoes like Nike and Reebok. Unlike those brands however the Adrenalines feel a little wider. I haven’t used Nike in years just because they feel too narrow.
Look. I never pay much mind to this. However, they must be good because my wife doesn’t hate them. There is no obnoxiuos neon color so which will come in handy when they do become the walk around shoes.
Use. I’ve already run about 9 miles on these new shoes. The one thing that I notice is there is a certain “springiness” that I feel. My legs almost bounce off the pavement with each stride. I like that. It makes running a bit easier.
I am a little concerned however, that I’m starting to feel my achilles tendon. A touch of achilles tendonitis last July sidelined me for a couple of weeks. I blame it for my failure to break the world record last year when it was a more manageable 3:20:48. No matter, the faster time has inspired me to get better. Is it possible that the shoe is responsible for last year’s injury? I hope not. Those were Brooks shoes too. I’ll monitor it and keep you posted.
