Joggling along the strip

Las Vegas can be a tricky area to go running. The main drag is Las Vegas Blvd and while it’s cool to see all the hotels and tourists, it’s pretty tricky to actually navigate for a run. There are limited places in which you can cross the street and a number of cross-overs which involve climbing up stairs, going across a walkway, and descending on the other side. joggling-vegas

This is a fun joggling challenge as long as there aren’t many pedestrians out. Of course, the more pedestrians there are the more smiles and waves you get so there is trade off. I’ve found that the best time to go joggling on the strip is in the morning, say before 9am.

Last night I stayed up until around 3am but got up for a morning joggling run along the strip. The weather was sunny and cool, perfect for joggling. It is especially nice to not have to bundle up and fight frost bite while getting in a run.

I like Las Vegas and running here. You can see people, unique buildings and mountains. Really, the mountains are great. I remember running through them during the Red Rock Canyon marathon. That was cool. Running also gives me a break from the gambling. While I enjoy gambling I sometimes find it depressing. Win or lose it sometimes seems like a complete waste of time and resources. Some day I might give it up. I definitely could never become a professional gambler. For the same reason I couldn’t become a professional stock trader. It all just seems like a futile activity that moves money around but doesn’t generate much positive in the world. But maybe I’m just feeling this way because of sleep depravation. We’ll see what 2 more days of Vegas does for me.

Quick run before my trip


What is JYAJ about?

Since I lost most of my website in November of 2013 I’ve had a hard time getting back to posting here on JYAJ. I’m happy to have revived all of my posts from 2006 – 2008 and much of 2009 but everything from late 2009 – 2013 is pretty much gone. Sigh. I have copies of some of the things but not all.

Anyway, this disaster does give me the opportunity to start again somewhat so that’s what I intend to do. And the best way to get started is to go back to the beginning and explain what Just Your Average Joggler is all about.

A lot of people write running blogs as a way to keep track of their workouts, thoughts and observations along the way. You can get lots of ideas while running plus you can see all sorts of strange things. There’s a lot of life going on every day which most people miss because they don’t take time out to see it. When you run every day, you see lots of life.

Who is JYAJ for?

While I like writing about my own adventures I never wanted this website to just be about me. I’ve always had you, the reader, in mind. Specifically, the ideal reader is someone who is interested in running, juggling, exercise, living healthy, science, and joggling.

What is JYAJ about?

I certainly want to write entertaining posts but it is even more important to me that I write useful posts. And these posts will be about topics that are relevant to the following subjects.

1. Joggling
2. Juggling
3. Running
4. Nutrition
5. Weight Loss
6. Living a long time

Who Wants to Live Forever?

I do!

Well, maybe not forever but for a really long time. winter-joggling

My goal is to live until I’m 107 years old.  In fact, I’ve even got a death date picked out.  The date of my demise will be November 11, 2076.

Why this year?

See, I want to definitely live until I’m over 100.  And since that will put me into the 2070’s I figured I should just keep going to see how the US celebrates our 300th anniversary.  Also, all those bicentennial quarters I’ve been saving all these years should be worth millions by 2076!

Why this date?

The date was arrived at for a couple of reasons.  First, I like baseball and would like to see who wins the World Series.  I wonder if they’ll still be playing in 2076?  This means I’ll have to live until at least November.

Next, I like palindromes so it would be nice to meet my demise on 11/11 or 12/12.  The former is the superior choice because it’s before the holidays.  I don’t want to ruin anyone’s holiday spirit by dying between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Stretch goal

I do realize this is a stretch goal but I think it’s good to have goals.  I also believe that by the time I get to be that old people will be routinely living over 100 years so I won’t even be that special.  Except, I will be the first 100 year old to finish a marathon while joggling!

In truth, this goal to live a long time is what started me on the road to joggling.  I read a book that suggested exercise was the best medicine for living a long time.  That started me running since running was the most efficient, most accessible and easiest exercise I could do.  The running started me racing and the racing started me joggling.

Basically, I joggle because I want to live until November 11, 2076.
